People decide to lose weight for a large number of reasons. Often the reason is to look better. Other reasons are to avoid being the object of fat jokes, teasing, and discrimination. Reasons such as these motivate a person for a short time but usually are not enough to produce lasting weight loss.

Weight loss improves your health, increases your mobility and your energy level. You may also have a longer and more productive life. Lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure are natural results of losing weight. Reduced blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels improve heart health and decrease stroke risk. Blood vessel inflammation is also reduced with weight loss. Lower inflammation levels results in improved blood flow, which reduces your risk for stroke and heart attacks. Metabolic Syndrome is a group of serious risk factors for developing Type II Diabetes and heart disease. Risk Factors include:
- Increased waist circumference-over 40″ for men and over 35″ for women.
- High Blood Pressure
- Improper ratio of high (healthy) and low (lousy) cholesterol.

Having 3 or more of these factors mean you could have metabolic syndrome. Losing weight may delay or even prevent this syndrome or may delay or prevent complications, if you already have it. Type II Diabetes is very common in the United States. Most people who have Type II Diabetes are overweight. Diabetes causes strokes, heart disease, kidney disease and many other life threatening problems. A person who is overweight has problems with the proper usage of insulin. You become insulin resistant, meaning that blood sugar is broken-down less efficiently. Diabetes is a great cause of disability and even loss of limbs. Type I Diabetes is not preventable and is caused by the body’s inability to produce adequate insulin. Type II however is almost completely preventable.
